Planting Stems of Peace
LI: Lisa Rose-Rodriguez
This initiative is designed to reduce the incidents of firearm assaults within at-risk populations. Using harm reduction models and a place-based approach to this public health issue will create a measurable sustainable outcome. The initiative plans to engage at-risk individuals and their communities in: developing conflict resolution skills, and working to enhance neighborhoods by removing trash, placing pressure on landlords to destroy or renovate abandoned buildings, and planting more trees. According to a 2018 USDA article, a direct association between tree canopy coverage and firearm assaults exists: the more trees the fewer incidents of gun violence.
